Oneota Co-op is a 51-year old food cooperative located in downtown Decorah. This community-owner grocer champions local, organic, sustainable and natural foods, supplements and gift items.
Twenty-six percent of the Co-op’s annual sales are generated by vendors located within 100 miles of Decorah. The Co-op prioritizes supporting these farms and family businesses while simultaneously providing seasonal vegetables, fruits, meats, cheeses, seeds, plants, and shelf-stable grocery items to its shoppers. Sweet Season Farm of Calmar (a SILT farm) is one of the Co-op’s many local vendors.
Building vibrant communities and ecosystems is central to the Oneota Co-op mission. The Co-op’s “Round Up at the Register” campaigns are intrinsically tied to this commitment. Shoppers “rounded up” $31,625.55 in 2024. SILT is one of the numerous nonprofit organizations benefiting from this practice.
Spring 2025 membership totals indicate that 5,623 households are member/owners of Oneota Co-op. These individuals primarily represent the community of Decorah (7,578 per 2023 census), but also contain homes within Winneshiek County, northeast Iowa and southeast Minnesota. The Co-op supports the federal SNAP program and Iowa’s Double Up Food Bucks (DUFB) initiative. While the Co-op welcomes new members, a membership is not required to shop at the Co-op.
Oneota Co-op has been a community hub throughout the decades, and a regional destination for those seeking food and goods that sustainably support people, our planet, and our local economy. It’s an organization that often works in cooperation with entities sharing similar goals. Together, these organizations invite all to come #growthegood (as the Co-op likes to say) in northeast Iowa. We invite you to view some of these local organizations in conversation @OneotaCo-op on YouTube. These videos were made possible by a generous grant from Travel Iowa.
