Bee Haven Farm

Nestled in the scenic countryside of Solon, Iowa, Bee Haven Farm stands as a testament to the dedication of Johnson County farmer Brian Fleck and his spouse Sabra to sustainable land stewardship. This 40-acre parcel, generously donated to the Sustainable Iowa Land Trust (SILT), embodies a commitment to environmental conservation and community resilience.

The Fleck Legacy:

Brian Fleck’s journey with Bee Haven Farm began in 2007 when he purchased the land as an investment. Over the years, his initial resentment towards land maintenance transformed into a profound love for the natural world. Recognizing the opportunity to create a sanctuary for native flora and fauna, Brian planted over 3,000 native trees, established prairie grasslands, and dedicated space for pollinator fields. In 2018, he introduced beekeeping as part of his conservation efforts, further enriching the farm’s biodiversity.

Preserving Habitat Diversity:

Brian’s vision for Bee Haven Farm extended beyond agricultural production to encompass habitat restoration and wildlife conservation. By nurturing diverse ecosystems that support a multitude of plant and animal species, Bee Haven Farm serves as a vital refuge for owls, fish, pheasants, turkeys, bats, and numerous pollinators.

A New Chapter:

With the donation of Bee Haven Farm to SILT, Brian and Sabra Fleck entrust the land to future generations of dedicated farmers. Embracing SILT’s vision of providing affordable land for new farmers, Brian eagerly anticipates the farm’s transition into a thriving agricultural operation under the stewardship of passionate individuals committed to sustainable farming practices.

Local Food Security and Community Growth:

Brian’s ties to Solon run deep, having lived in the community for two decades and published the Solon Economist Newspaper for 20 years. Through the donation of Bee Haven Farm, he aims to create opportunities for job growth and promote healthy food production for the community. With the right stewardship, Bee Haven Farm has the potential to become a cornerstone of local food security and stability, fostering a resilient agricultural landscape for generations to come.

A Shared Vision:

Veteran Dustin Sanford currently tends to the bees and harvests honey on Bee Haven Farm, contributing to its ecological vibrancy and agricultural productivity. As Bee Haven Farm embarks on its next chapter, it represents a collaborative effort to uphold the values of environmental conservation, community engagement, and sustainable agriculture.
