Heart Farm

Heart Farm, a picturesque acreage located just a half-hour east of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was generously donated to the Sustainable Iowa Land Trust (SILT) in 2022 by Gary Hart and Derith Vogt. This 10-acre property boasts a lovingly renovated farmhouse and a collection of outbuildings, reflecting Derith’s extensive career in showing horses. SILT, committed to preserving Iowa’s agricultural heritage and fostering sustainable farming practices, gratefully accepted the deed to Heart Farm, recognizing its potential to support sustainable food production and community well-being.

History:

Gary Hart, with roots in Wayne County, Iowa, and Derith Vogt, originally from Houston, Texas, found their way to Heart Farm in 1983. Drawn to the tranquility of rural living within commuting distance of Gary’s job on the Chicago and North Western railroad, the couple settled on the property, which had a rich history of agricultural heritage. Originally part of a larger farm owned by the Manual family, the property was subdivided in the 1970s, with Gary and Derith acquiring the house and five acres, later expanding to include adjacent lots.

The land, once covered in burdock, underwent a transformation under Gary and Derith’s stewardship. Through manual labor and thoughtful land management practices, they restored the land, cultivating native grasses and forbs, and creating habitat for wildlife. Heart Farm became not only a recreational haven for the couple and their horses but also a sanctuary amidst industrial farmland, providing refuge for native flora and fauna.

Vision for the Future:

With the donation of Heart Farm to SILT, Gary and Derith envision a future where the land continues to serve as a beacon of sustainability and environmental stewardship. While the farm currently supports recreational activities and sustains wildlife, the couple hopes that it will also become a productive resource for sustainable food production. SILT’s commitment to preserving the property’s agricultural integrity ensures that future generations can benefit from its fertile soils and pastoral beauty.

Flexibility and Innovation:

Recognizing the changing landscape of agriculture and land use, Gary and Derith granted SILT the flexibility to adapt the use of Heart Farm to meet the community’s evolving needs. Whether it continues as a sustainable table food production site or transitions to accommodate other uses, such as recreational farming or educational programs, the legacy of Heart Farm will endure, guided by SILT’s commitment to sustainable land stewardship.
