Moon Farm

Moon Farm, nestled in the serene landscapes of Calhoun County, Iowa, holds a rich history spanning over a century. Originally established in 1914 by Charley and Kate DeLong, the farm has remained within the Henning/DeLong family for generations. In 2019, the Henning Sisters Ltd. Partnership, led by Beth Henning, decided to protect the family’s legacy by placing a conservation easement on the property, ensuring its preservation for future generations.

The Henning/DeLong Legacy:

With roots tracing back over 120 years, the Henning/DeLong tenure in Section 15 of Elm Grove Township reflects a profound connection to the land and a commitment to conservation. Beth Henning, retired from public service, spearheaded the effort to safeguard the farm’s natural areas while supporting aspiring farmers. SILT, recognizing the significance of the farm’s heritage, committed to preserving its integrity through a conservation easement.

Preserving Farmland for the Future:

Moon Farm’s conservation easement allows for the continuation of sustainable agricultural practices while ensuring the protection of vital natural resources. Shannan and Rodney Potts of Potts Organic Farms are the current stewards of the land, cultivating certified organic corn and soy, as well as implementing CRP, edge-of-field buffers, and three-crop rotations.

A Commitment to Sustainability:

Under the stewardship of Shannan and Rodney Potts, Moon Farm embodies a commitment to sustainable agriculture. Their dedication to organic farming practices reflects a harmonious relationship with the environment, promoting soil health, biodiversity, and ecological resilience.
