Perennial Croft

Nestled in the idyllic landscapes of Jefferson County, Iowa, Perennial Croft epitomizes the vision and dedication of Jim and Sara Anderson to sustainable land stewardship and community resilience. As the first SILT-protected farm in Jefferson County, Perennial Croft represents a beacon of hope for future generations of natural table food farmers.

The Anderson Legacy:

Jim and Sara Anderson’s journey with Perennial Croft embodies a commitment to preserving agricultural land for sustainable food production and environmental conservation. With a background in Transcendental Meditation instruction and astrophysics, Jim and Sara have transformed their homestead into a thriving farm, complete with a straw bale home and a picturesque pond. Their unwavering dedication to regenerative food farming and land preservation reflects their deep-rooted connection to the land and their community.

Protecting Agricultural Heritage:

Perennial Croft encompasses 35 acres of fertile land, including a beautiful home and picturesque surroundings. Recognizing the need to ensure the long-term viability of their farm for future generations, Jim and Sara have chosen to partner with the Sustainable Iowa Land Trust (SILT) to protect their land in perpetuity. Through SILT’s innovative model, Perennial Croft will remain affordable for future farmers while serving as a hub of sustainable agriculture in Jefferson County.

A Partnership for the Future:

While Jim and Sara continue to live and work on Perennial Croft, their partnership with SILT ensures that the land will be available to natural table food farmers after their tenure. SILT will hold the deed to the property, offering long-term, affordable leases to farmers who wish to cultivate nutrient-dense food for the residents of Jefferson County. This innovative model allows farmers to gain equity while preserving the agricultural heritage of the region.

Community Engagement:

Jim and Sara’s commitment to sustainable farming extends beyond the boundaries of Perennial Croft. Sara has been instrumental in ensuring that regenerative food farming is permitted in the HOA rules, advocating for the protection of agricultural land within the community. By fostering partnerships with local farmers and advocating for sustainable land use practices, Jim and Sara are actively contributing to the resilience and vibrancy of Jefferson County’s agricultural community.
