In a landmark move for Iowa’s agricultural landscape, John Wittrig and his family have etched their names in history by establishing the state’s first agricultural conservation easement, safeguarding 130 acres of their farm for sustainable food production. This pioneering initiative, facilitated by the Sustainable Iowa Land Trust (SILT), sets a precedent for conservation-minded farming practices in the region.

A Legacy of Stewardship: 

John Wittrig’s deep-rooted connection to the land traces back to his upbringing on the family farm near Winfield. Inspired by a vision of sustainable agriculture, John and his late wife, Betty, embarked on a journey to establish an organic chestnut orchard on their property in the 1990s. The conservation easement is a testament to their enduring commitment to soil health, environmental conservation, and the preservation of small-scale farming practices.

A Vision for the Future: 

While Tree Haven Farm is not currently available for farming, it is slated to transition out of the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) in approximately 15 years. At that time, the farm is expected to become even more valuable for its affordability, presenting an enticing opportunity for farmers committed to sustainable agriculture.
