LSP Features Luzum Farm Transfer

The Land Stewardship Project, a SILT ally based in Minnesota, featured SILT and its transfer of the Luzum Heritage Farm to the Boone Family in a recent newsletter. We thank Brian DeVore, LSP Managing Editor and Media Coordinator for his work on this story. DeVore is author of Wildly Successful Farming, published by the University of Wisconsin Press. The days are short, the dark is cold, the stars are bright. It’s time for inside work. My inside work today is a story about trust, a story that includes you and that does not end today. In November 2014, twenty-five people came together in Perry IA to decide whether or not to launch the Sustainable Iowa Land Trust. They represented 25 leaps of faith. Farmer Chosen for Luzum Heritage Farm

He is looking forward to building a farm grounded in the ecology, history, and food traditions of the Upper Midwest. Tor will farm this transition year while applications remain open for a longer-term lease. Due to the timing of the Luzum donation this summer, the SILT Farmers Committee considered it only fair to [...]

170-Acre Farm Donated to SILT!

Decorah – Lyle and Sue Luzum of Calmar, IA donated their entire family farm to Iowa’s newest land trust at a ceremony at Decorah Bank and Trust Friday. The 170 acres the Luzum family has farmed since 1873 is the largest yet for the young land trust, more than doubling its 115 acres over 3 farms it has acquired in its first two years. “This is the first time in Iowa’s history that a family has committed such a large tract to permanent sustainable food production,” said SILT President Suzan Erem. “The Luzum family has provided an incredible gift [...]
