New Research Finds Climate Solutions in the Soil

We know that poor land management and the conversion of native ecosystems to agriculture can lead to release greenhouse gases. Two papers recently showed that improving agricultural management can substantially reduce these emissions and in some cases sequester carbon from the atmosphere in the soil: The National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition and Breakthrough Strategies and Solutions, LLC, jointly published a paper that explores how soil carbon is sequestered, the state of soil carbon research, and the debate on its potential. The journal Nature published a review that was all about the role of soils in addressing climate change SILT supports [...]

Iowa farmland values decline nearly 9%

The Iowa Realtors Land Institute farmland survey through March shows the average value of cropland fell to $6,732 an acre, 8.7 percent lower less than a year ago, or 22.5 percent lower in 2013. Farm incomes gave been dropping at even higher rates. SILT helps farmers take land access out of the equation, lowering the need for huge capital investment and reducing the risk of defaulting on payments. https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/money/agriculture/2016/03/30/survey-iowa-farmland-values-decline-nearly-9-percent/82430564/

Iowa Land Access Forum

Thursday March 31st, a group of beginning farmers, organizations and service providers gathered to talk about the challenges around land access in Iowa. Midland FFA Welcomes SILT

Suzan Erem and pie maker Virginia Pace at the Midland FFA Dinner in March. SILT President Suzan Erem didn't know what was coming to her when the auctioneer for the Midland FFA pie auction called her to the front of the room. Pies and pans of cupcakes had been going for upwards of $150 and as high as $250 each. But the pie up for grabs at the moment was the largest, most beautiful cherry pie of the night. By the time the auctioneer talked Suzan into pitching, people were shouting out "$500!" and "$1,000!" and it became clear [...]

Iowa farmland rent climbed 50% over the past five years. Grain prices have sunk 50 percent or more since 2012, but the cash rents have been slower to decline. Consider protecting 50 acres for a next generation fruit and vegetable grower and taking the rent to the bank! https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/money/agriculture/2016/03/14/cash-strapped-farmers-struggle-pay-cropland-rents/81170452/

New generations set the tone for healthier lifestyles

A recent article in Agriculture.com highlights the changing habits in 'new' generations. "Solid research says the millennials’ pursuit of a healthier lifestyle is filtering up and down the generational ladder. The kids of millennials will eat the way their parents train them. Here’s the biggie: Millennials are teaching their parents – the boomers – how to eat healthier." SILT supports the movement towards a healthier food system by allowing farmers and the community to learn the latest, greatest techniques in sustainable food production from other farmers employing best practices from around the country and the world while developing new ones all the time.
