Announcing their intention to place their farm under a SILT easement, Tom Wahl and Kathy Dice of Red Fern Farm in Wapello hosted nearly 30 people at the final SILT Showcase of the year. 170-Acre Farm Donated to SILT!

Decorah – Lyle and Sue Luzum of Calmar, IA donated their entire family farm to Iowa’s newest land trust at a ceremony at Decorah Bank and Trust Friday. SILT Hosts Raj Patel and Friends

SILT was honored to host international author and activist Raj Patel in July as he and his Malawian guests -farmer Annita Chitaya and nurse Esther Lupafya - traveled the U.S. talking to Americans about what climate change is doing to their country and about the relations and roles between men and women in farming. SILT Announces Farmer Vetting Policy

The Sustainable Iowa Land Trust announced today the publication of its much-anticipated SILT FARMER VETTING POLICY. For more than two years, young and disadvantaged farmers around Iowa have been asking what SILT will require to farm its farms. Applicants with no long-term access to land but who have experience and a business plan will make the first cut. The SILT Farmer Committee deliberated extensively over issues of equity and historic imbalance as well, and reviewers are instructed to be cognizant of those issues when reviewing applications. “Letters to a Young Farmer”

SILT proudly announces the arrival of a wonderful book called “Letters to a Young Farmer,” featuring three dozen esteemed writers, farmers, chefs, activists, and visionaries who address the highs and lows of farming life, as well as larger questions of how our food is produced and consumed. One of those visionaries is Iowa’s own Fred Kirschenmann. Watch for a possible author signing event in the future!
