SILT Announces Farmer Vetting Policy

The Sustainable Iowa Land Trust announced today the publication of its much-anticipated SILT FARMER VETTING POLICY. For more than two years, young and disadvantaged farmers around Iowa have been asking what SILT will require to farm its farms. Applicants with no long-term access to land but who have experience and a business plan will make the first cut. The SILT Farmer Committee deliberated extensively over issues of equity and historic imbalance as well, and reviewers are instructed to be cognizant of those issues when reviewing applications. In the process of developing the policy, SILT queried land trusts across the country, including fellow members of the Land Trust Alliance and [...]

SILT in the News

SILT has been making waves across the country and across the "pond!"  In addition to our very own feature in Civil Eats last month, great stories in the Manchester Guardian and Rodale Institute's This Organic Life brought readers news of the innovative land access work we're doing here in Iowa. SILT  provides affordable land access to young farmers, gives retiring farmers and landowners peace of mind, advocates nature-friendly, neighborhood-friendly farming, increases our supply of healthy food, sets the trend among land trusts for focusing on farms, improves Iowa's water quality through private sector, voluntary programs, provides opportunity to Slow Money investors [...]

“Letters to a Young Farmer”

SILT proudly announces the arrival of a wonderful book called “Letters to a Young Farmer,” featuring three dozen esteemed writers, farmers, chefs, activists, and visionaries who address the highs and lows of farming life, as well as larger questions of how our food is produced and consumed. One of those visionaries is Iowa’s own Fred Kirschenmann. Watch for a possible author signing event in the future! A huge thank you to Stone Barns and Raj Patel for their assistance in making some copies available.

"The Sustainable Iowa Land Trust makes sustainability central to its work, helping young, sustainable, and diversified farmers grow in the land of corn and soy". Great to see SILT featured in this publication! Farm matched – One farm still available

SILT has already matched two of its three farms, the latest in NE Iowa. Farmer Will Lorentzen with his wife Adrian White, a freelance writer, moved to SILT's third farm in Northeast Iowa last week. Will plans to farm by limiting his tillage footprint while still producing food for market, including shiitake mushrooms he is growing in the timber. STILL AVAILABLE: Perfect for a beginner -  Acreage 70 miles south of Des Moines. Timber, [...]

It’s About People Coming Together

120 people attended the SILT dinner this year to honor our third land donor, Steve Beaumont, who brought our total acres protected to 115 in just two years. The celebration came on the heels of a day-long planning session that welcomed 7 new board members and 40 volunteers who set SILT's goals for protecting more land to grow healthy food. People are coming together because they understand it takes a combination of time, effort and money to fulfill our ambitious mission: SILT protection translates into more fresh food, clean soil and water and affordable land for future generations of Iowans. Please help us launch [...]

Decline in farmland values – how will we protect it?

"Iowa's average farmland value declined for the third year in a row, down 5.9 percent to $7,183 an acre over the past year. It's the first time since the 1980s farm crisis that land values have fallen three straight years, according to an Iowa State University report released Tuesday."* Imagine an Iowa where our land price fluctuations weren't based on three crops - corn/bean/hogs: would Iowa farmers be on such a roller coaster? Would private companies like the ones mentioned in the article be waiting for prices to drop more and grab land away from family farmers? It's time to protect Iowa farmland and support [...]

Steve Beaumont Honored at SILT Dinner

Steve Beaumont receives a standing ovation from SILT supporters. Steve Beaumont became the third Iowan to permanently protect his land to grow healthy food.  "I believe SILT will help rejuvenate our small towns and rural communities through its work," Steve said. "And I'm looking forward to working with the young people on the land, to the extent they'd welcome it." 120 SILT supporters gathered this year at the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden to honor Steve and celebrate a great second year. Steve's donation brings SILT protection to a total of 115 acres in just two years. A retired carpenter, Steve lives [...]
